In April of 2001, we received an e-mail from Elizabeth, a member of the Children With Diabetes on-line community. She asked if we would be interested in designing a bracelet to help raise awareness for juvenile diabetes.
My wife, Meredith, and I have a niece that has type one diabetes. Ashlee was diagnosed October 31, 1997, about two months before her 6th birthday. Since we were already familiar with juvenile diabetes, we did not have to think about whether or not we were going to design a bracelet. The questions we faced were how quickly could we come up with a design and how many designs should we make. In one month, we had two designs to show Elizabeth and the other CWD chat members.
For our diabetes awareness designs, we chose to use sterling silver with an antique finish and a garnet in the center. It is said that every cloud has a silver lining. In this case, the dark area represents diabetes and silver represents a cure. The garnet represents the blood drops taken for testing of sugar levels.
We have received several requests for other diabetes awareness jewelry designs since putting the first two bracelet designs on the web. We are adding new designs to the web-site as quickly as they are completed. If there is something that you would like to see offered on the site, please contact us.
We price our diabetes awareness jewelry as low as possible. We feel that by doing this more people will be able to purchase it and help raise awareness. We donate ten percent of the purchase price of every piece of diabetes awareness and medical identification jewelry to research. Customers are asked to choose an organization when an order is placed.
